Here’s what the company asked for from the sharks.

  • Show: Shark Tank
  • Season: 4
  • Episode: 26
  • Date Aired: May 17, 2013

In the season finale of season four, Three Day Rule, represented by cofounder Val Brenner, asked the sharks for a $200,000 investment for a 10% stake in the company. This would value the company at the time at $2 million.

During the pitch, it was revealed that the company had been founded only four weeks prior to the show’s filming, but had already brought in $70,000. Additionally, it was clarified that even though they had brought in a sizeable amount of money, the company had yet to turn a profit. Arguably, this is to be expected of a company that is only four weeks old.

Three Day Rule received a lot of criticism from the sharks.

While the sharks were supportive of Brenner’s passion, the response to the company was not a warm one. Here are some highlights of the reactions:

  • Mark Cuban had concerns that Three Day Rule wasn’t differentiated enough from other dating and matchmaking options on the market.
  • Robert Herjavec felt that Three Day Rule was focused on too small of a niche and that the potential customer base was not large enough to support their growth.
  • Daymond John took issue with the company’s $2 million valuation.
  • Kevin O’Leary also felt the $2 million valuation was too high.
  • Barbara Corcoran had a lot of criticism for the company’s name. She said that it reminder her of an old dating rule about when you were okay to sleep with a romantic prospect.

Regarding Barbara’s comments, they’re interesting because the three day rule in dating typically has nothing to do with intimacy. It refers to waiting three days before returning someone’s phone calls after you meet or a first date.

Founder Talia Goldstein revealed she felt Brenner’s single status played a role.

On the “Stairway to CEO” podcast, Talia Goldstein shared that she felt that the fact Brenner’s was single may have played a role in the sharks not being interested. This is certainly possible, though, the shark’s responses focused on the merits of the business.

Three Day Rule received no deal, but still booked a win.

Ultimately, all of the sharks declined the offer and there were no counteroffers made either. While this would seem like a loss for the Three Day Rule team, the exposure did quite a bit for the company. On the night the episode aired, the company generated an impressive 10,000 signups.

According to Goldstein, this made the company’s appearance on Shark Tank well worth it.
